Speech-to-braille Interface
For people with combined sight and hearing impairments, communication and integration in society are challenging. This report examines the development of a speech-to-braille interface that gives deaf-blind people a better perception of their environment. The interface converts instantaneously nearby speech to braille on a portable device. To develop this product, three main aspects are considered. First, the audio is written to a text file using speech recognition on a phone application. Secondly, the text is mapped to a braille sequence on the device itself. Eventually, the braille sequence is displayed on a mechanical output of vibrating dots sensed by the user. The speech-to-braille interface is the first device to ever perform a real-time audio-to-braille conversion.
